As of 3 November, De Bieb Zaandam is temporarily closed—not due to structural or building issues, but because of an increasingly unsafe atmosphere caused by groups of young people behaving disruptively. The most alarming incident: several youths used pepper spray inside the library, seriously jeopardising the safety of all visitors. Although the closure is temporary, its consequences are far-reaching: courses have been cancelled, and many young people who simply wished to study quietly are now excluded. The municipality is working with schools and the police to find solutions, but the central question remains: how can a public space remain safe without compromising its principle of accessibility? For residents of the Zaanstreek, this is more than a local issue—it reflects a growing challenge across the Netherlands.

À compter du 3 novembre, la bibliothèque De Bieb Zaandam est temporairement fermée, non pas à cause de problèmes liés au bâtiment, mais en raison d’une atmosphère de plus en plus dangereuse provoquée par des jeunes en groupe. Le fait le plus inquiétant : certains jeunes ont utilisé du poivre de Cayenne à l’intérieur de la bibliothèque, mettant gravement en danger la sécurité de tous les visiteurs. Bien que cette fermeture soit temporaire, elle a déjà des conséquences importantes : des cours ont été annulés, et de nombreux jeunes qui souhaitaient étudier en toute tranquillité sont désormais exclus. La municipalité collabore avec les écoles et la police pour trouver des solutions, mais la question centrale reste : comment maintenir la sécurité d’un espace public sans sacrifier son principe d’accès ouvert ? Pour les habitants de la Zaanstreek, cela va bien au-delà d’une simple affaire locale – c’est un miroir d’un défi croissant en Hollande.

Vanaf 3 november is De Bieb Zaandam tijdelijk gesloten, niet vanwege gebouwproblemen, maar vanwege een onveilige sfeer veroorzaakt door hangjongeren. Het meest verontrustende feit: een aantal jongeren heeft pepperspray gebruikt in de bibliotheek, wat de veiligheid van alle bezoekers ernstig in gevaar bracht. Hoewel de sluiting tijdelijk is, heeft ze al verstrekkende gevolgen: cursussen zijn afgelast, en veel jongeren die rustig wilden studeren, worden nu uitgesloten. De gemeente zoekt met scholen en de politie naar oplossingen, maar de kern blijft: hoe hou je een openbare ruimte veilig zonder het toegankelijkheidsprincipe op te geven? Voor wie in de Zaanstreek woont, is dit meer dan een lokale kwestie – het is een spiegel van een groeiende uitdaging in Nederland.

The eight libraries in the Brainport region have launched Boekbot, an AI assistant that helps users find suitable books. Boekbot offers personalised suggestions while respecting user privacy. The launch took place during the Dutch Design Week at the Natlab in Eindhoven, with the attendance of Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem and other prominent figures. The app is free to download and does not require a library membership.

Boekbot offre des suggestions personnalisées tout en respectant la vie privée de l’utilisateur. Le lancement a eu lieu lors de la Dutch Design Week au Natlab, à Eindhoven, en présence du maire Jeroen Dijsselbloem et d’autres personnalités importantes. L’application est gratuite à télécharger et ne nécessite pas d’adhésion à une bibliothèque.

De app is gratis te downloaden en vereist geen lidmaatschap van een bibliotheek.

Last Wednesday, digital expert Bart Ensink gave a lecture at the ZINiN Library in Hellendoorn on the impact of AI on the digital world. Using examples such as self-driving cars and AI for X-rays, Ensink explained how AI is already shaping our daily lives and how libraries can respond to these changes. The lecture, aimed at both professionals and interested citizens, was followed by a Q&A session.

Mercredi dernier, l’expert digital Bart Ensink a donné une conférence à la ZINiN Bibliotheek à Hellendoorn sur l’impact de l’IA sur le monde numérique. Avec des exemples tels que les voitures autonomes et l’IA pour les radiographies, Ensink a expliqué comment l’IA façonne déjà notre vie quotidienne et comment les bibliothèques peuvent y répondre. La conférence était destinée aux professionnels ainsi qu’aux citoyens intéressés et a été suivie d’une session de questions-réponses.

Laatste woensdag hield digitaal expert Bart Ensink een lezing in de ZINiN Bibliotheek in Hellendoorn over de invloed van AI op de digitale wereld. Met voorbeelden als zelfrijdende auto’s en AI voor röntgenfoto’s, legde Ensink uit hoe AI ons dagelijks leven al vorm geeft en hoe bibliotheken hierop kunnen reageren. De lezing was gericht op zowel professionals als geïnteresseerde burgers en werd gevolgd door een Q&A-sessie.
