AI Chatbots Often Recommend Left-Progressive Parties When Completing the Voting Compass

Research by RTL Z has shown that AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Grok frequently recommend left-progressive parties when completing the Voting Compass. Expert Martin Rosema warns against potential misinformation and lack of transparency when using AI for voting advice. However, AI can be useful in summarising and comparing election manifestos, as demonstrated by the Stichting Open Politiek, which has achieved a reliability of over 99% with AI-generated summaries.
Research by RTL Z: AI Chatbots Vote Left
Research by RTL Z has shown that AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Grok frequently recommend left-progressive parties when completing the Voting Compass. These bots consistently score close to parties such as D66, GroenLinks, PvdA, and Volt [1]. This comes at a time when many Dutch citizens are still searching for their vote in the run-up to the Second Chamber elections, which will take place within two weeks [1].
Warnings from Experts
Political expert Martin Rosema, a political scientist and researcher of voter behaviour at the University of Twente, warns against potential misinformation and lack of transparency when using AI for voting advice. According to Rosema, these bots sometimes provide incorrect information and lack transparency. “You have no idea why you receive a particular recommendation. That is problematic,” states Rosema [1][3].
Alternative Applications of AI
Despite the warnings, Rosema also sees opportunities for AI. He suggests that chatbots could be used to delve deeper into specific issues or to compare positions. “I would not ask a chatbot who I should vote for, but it is good to look at what you can do with it,” emphasises Rosema [1][3].
Stichting Open Politiek: AI for Reliable Summaries
Another example of the useful application of AI can be found at the Stichting Open Politiek. On the website openverkiezingen.nl, AI is used to summarise and validate election manifestos. Chairman Floris Hoogenboom explains: “We manually validated a thousand statements and checked whether the answers matched the election manifestos. The reliability is more than 99 percent.” The site also offers a reverse voting guide where users can create their own statements and see the responses from parties [1][3].
Challenges and Benefits
While AI can be a valuable tool for summarising and comparing political programmes, there are also challenges. Both Rosema and Hoogenboom warn that AI-generated summaries can contain errors. “As a user, you are also involved; if you accept everything at face value, I would not do that. But it can help you find relevant information,” states Rosema [1][3].
