The NVJ and Free Press Unlimited have launched a radio spot to highlight the value of independent journalism. The spot, which will air until 28 October, calls on voters to recognise the importance of press freedom, especially in times of increasing disinformation. Rowan Blijd, vice-chairman of the NVJ, emphasises in the spot that a democratic rule of law requires free journalism.

Radio Spot Emphasises Importance of Press Freedom

The radio spot, which is part of the STER initiative, will be broadcast on NPO Radio 1 and other platforms. It underscores the need to protect the integrity and independence of the media, particularly in times of increasing disinformation and fake news. Rowan Blijd, vice-chairman of the NVJ, delivers the message: ‘On 29 October, also consider what kind of country you want to live in. A democratic rule of law needs free journalism. Without journalists, we are groping in the dark.’ [1]

Collaboration for Greater Impact

The campaign comes at a crucial time, just before the Second Chamber elections on 29 October. The NVJ and Free Press Unlimited are working together on the campaign to shape public opinion on the importance of a free press for a democratic rule of law. Annet Nijhof, director of Free Press Unlimited, states: ‘Independent journalism is crucial for a democratic society.’ [1][3]

Extensive Reach and Target Audience

The twenty-second message will be broadcast throughout the day. It is expected to reach around 600,000 listeners in the target group aged 25 to 67, who will hear the message on average three times. This is a significant step in raising awareness about the importance of press freedom. [1][3]

Context and Background

Press freedom is increasingly threatened by disinformation and fake news. The NVJ and Free Press Unlimited aim to raise voters’ awareness of the importance of independent journalism. In an era where information is rapidly and widely disseminated, it is essential that voters can rely on trustworthy sources. [1][2][3]

Political Context and Future Plans

Villamedia has reviewed the party programmes of political parties in recent weeks to see their plans regarding journalism and media. These efforts form part of a broader initiative to preserve and strengthen the integrity of the media. [2]
