The Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ) and Free Press Unlimited will participate in the Red Line demonstration on Sunday, 5 October in Amsterdam. The action aims to stop attacks on journalists and promote press freedom. The NVJ will set up a press tent to draw attention to attacks on Palestinian journalists, where 235 media workers have lost their lives since the start of the war [1][2].

Symbolic Action for Press Freedom

This is the third time that demonstrators will draw a symbolic red line. “We are joining again to draw a clear line for our journalistic colleagues,” according to the NVJ. The demonstration is organised by several social organisations, including Amnesty International, Plant an Olive Tree, and Save the Children, and begins at 13:00 on the Museumplein in Amsterdam [3].

Programme and Route

The programme on Sunday starts at 13:00 with a stage programme on the Museumplein. Speakers such as Rita Baroud (Journalist from Gaza), Samah Jaber (Palestinian Community Netherlands), Hedy d’Acona (Former Minister), and Loes de Kleijn (Doctors for Gaza) will address the audience. At the end of the stage programme, participants will join the demonstration along the route: Museumplein – Overtoom – Amstelveenseweg – Museumplein. The length of the route is 6.2 kilometres [4].

Practical Information for Participants

Participants are encouraged to wear red clothing and bring water, snacks, and a raincoat. There is a WhatsApp channel for practical communication during the demonstration. For children, there is a Save the Children play area behind the stage, where they can engage in sports and games under the supervision of volunteers. There is also a ‘Chat Tent’ where children can talk to an expert about how war affects them and draw or write their dreams for children in Gaza on dream boards [5].

Van Gogh Museum Closure

Due to the expected crowds around the Museumplein, the Van Gogh Museum, in consultation with the City of Amsterdam, will be closed on Sunday, 5 October 2025. All tickets for that day will be automatically cancelled, and visitors who booked through the website will receive a full refund within two weeks. Visitors who booked through an official ticket partner should contact them for a refund [6][7].
