BUas AI Strategy Compass Wins International Recognition
The Bureau of Universities and Colleges (BUas) has won second prize with the AI Strategy Compass at the UNESCO Global Forum in Thailand. This tool helps organisations make conscious choices when implementing AI, in line with UNESCO guidelines. The recognition underscores the international impact of BUas’s applied research, which focuses on responsible AI applications in education and public services [1].
International Collaboration for Responsible AI
Professor Springael, who presented the AI Strategy Compass, met policymakers, researchers, and visionaries from more than 70 countries during the forum. He emphasised that the conference aimed to ensure that AI is developed ethically, in accordance with human values. This recognition means a lot to Springael and BUas, as it shows that their applied research is also internationally recognised [2].
AI in Practice
The AI Strategy Compass emerged from real conversations with organisations struggling with AI implementation. The tool helps shape AI implementation consciously, focusing on what truly matters. It is an iterative process that has evolved through experiments, reflection, and collaboration between various departments within BUas [2].
Future Perspective: AI and Sustainability
The research by BUas aligns perfectly with the goals of KreativEU, the European consortium of which BUas is a part. Within KreativEU, Springael works on developing AI systems that are inherently sustainable and ethical, with consideration for Europe’s rich cultural history and diversity. The Global Forum aimed to translate UNESCO’s AI ethics guidelines into concrete action, which aligns precisely with the vision of BUas and KreativEU [2].
Responsible AI in Public Services
The UNESCO Global Forum aims to translate the principles of responsible AI into practice. One of the key outcomes of the forum was the launch of the AI Literacy Training for Civil Servants. This initiative is designed to promote AI awareness and responsible implementation in government sectors [3].
Inclusive AI and Language Diversity
Another highlight of the forum was the launch of the Coalition on Linguistic Diversity. This coalition focuses on preserving cultural heritage by developing inclusive AI frameworks. With more than 2,000 languages in Africa and 700 spoken languages in India, this initiative underscores the need for language diversity in AI development [4].
Women in the AI Sector
Alessandra Sala, Senior Director of AI and Data Science at Shutterstock and Co-Chair of UNESCO Women for Ethical AI, spoke at the forum about algorithmic discrimination and the need to promote women’s leadership in AI development. Her contribution highlighted the crucial role women play in shaping a fair, inclusive, and ethical AI future [4].
Successful AI Applications in Information
AI is playing an increasingly significant role in modern information and public communication. Specific applications include personalised information provision, chatbots for public service delivery, and AI-driven information campaigns. These applications help reach various target groups, improve information transfer, and measure the effectiveness of information campaigns [GPT].
Benefits and Challenges of AI in Information
The benefits of AI in information are clear: faster and more efficient information transfer, personalised experiences, and better data analysis. However, there are also significant challenges, such as privacy concerns, inclusivity, and the reliability of AI systems. It is crucial to address these aspects to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of AI applications in information [GPT].
Practical Examples of Successful AI Applications
An example of a successful AI application in information is the implementation of chatbots in government agencies. These chatbots provide quick and accurate answers to frequently asked questions, making it easier for citizens to access the information they need. Another example is the use of AI to personalise educational content, which helps make complex information accessible to diverse audiences [GPT].
