Details of the Attack
According to the FSB, the Ukrainian intelligence service recruited a man and two women to carry out the planned car bomb attack. The women were instructed to tail the target before retrieving a homemade explosive from a local cemetery and handing it over to the assassin [1]. The suspects have been charged with preparing terrorist acts and illegal possession of explosives, and may also face charges of membership in a terrorist organisation and treason, which carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment [1].
FSB Warnings
The FSB warned that ‘Ukrainian intelligence services are still actively searching online for individuals who can carry out terrorist and sabotage attacks’. The service urged people to remain vigilant and avoid communicating with unknown individuals through messaging apps [1].
Previous Incidents
Earlier, in December 2024, the head of the Russian Army’s biological and chemical weapons unit, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, and his deputy were killed in an explosion in Moscow. In April 2025, another high-ranking Russian general, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, was killed in another explosion in Moscow [1].
